Everywhere, from software to Internet to top government, let's change it and think it out later. When I was an hour-slave to the corporate world there was a saying - "Change provides an illusion of progress".

Right? lol. That's a good one. Worth thinking about... in more aspects than just Medium, too.

Jerry, I love that saying. I was thinking, you can't fight City Hall. (Albeit we can protest) I'm choosing to take a deep breath and go with whatever WTF flow

Right? That was a good one. We all just go with the flow, because there's not a different option, but wow sometimes. I guess we're just along for the ride.

Non-members can read stories behind the paywall but are limited to three a month. Non-members can also read Medium articles that have been tweeted for free.

Good point on Twitter. So, even less incentive to pay the fee. And now they don't get paid if they don't have 100 followers, either. I can see them wondering why they should pay. Sometimes I wonder if they throw their ideas in a jar and implement the ones they pull out at random. lol

I know it will backfire. It is a scare tactic with no teeth. Write and see what happens.

I think you're right. Seems contrary to want new signups, but tell them they can't earn for their writing. Lots of publications prefer stories to be behind the paywall, which will make it harder.

I haven’t been writing because of health issues but Medium’s changes sound silly.

I’m a writer on Quora. I started in 2016 and was honored as Top Writer in 2018. That’s only given to a few hundred people per year.

It’s an interesting world on Quora. More international than local. I made connections and gain an audience. Some followed me to Medium. I’ve heard they have stated to pay too but I haven’t checked it yet. I will now. :). I’ll let you know what I think.

Well, I don't pay that close attention to what's going on BUT if they banned the word Medium, I wouldn't be earning anything on one of my high paying posts about an actual medium...a clairvoyant lol.

lol, Kristi. I liked that post. No, I don't think they should ban the word Medium, but maybe use it to flag for review. Then yours would pass. :)

I pay little attention to compensation changes at Medium. Why?

First, It has no relevance to me. My occasional writing (mostly haiku or tanka) posts are there to inspire, hopefully, other like-minded poets (amateur like myself or otherwise). Not for $.

Second, I do a lot of reading at Medium. I find a significant number of informative and interesting articles on health and wellness in particular. I enjoy satirical essays on politics; laughter is the best medicine in these truly crazy times. Many poetry and spiritual writers at Medium get the rusty wheels in my head churning at a faster pace.

Hence, I just shrug my shoulders at new announcements from the editors. The only constant in life is change. No?

I believe I’ve noted before to you before, that I am in a good place financially. I realize how blessed I am to even write this in a public space, out loud, as it were.

I have absolutely no intention of hustling for new Medium members. When will the Board of Directors (or whatever their governing body is called) be able to say, “we have enough.”?

I'm where you are. A poet, retired from PR. Doing ok financially - could certainly use infusions of $ but I'm grateful I don't HAVE to view Medium as income. I write haiku/tankas too. Plus other forms of verse. Going to read yours now! Nice to meet you, though your name is very familiar. We must read many of the same poets!

Great read as always! It almost seems like desperation on Medium's part.

Like , " We're not too sure how to increase membership, so we're putting it in your hands! Good luck!"
