I think the only way to find and keep people on Medium is to write what you want to write and hope for the best lol. I've been here for just over a year and now that I've built a random audience I have finally figured out the direction I wish to go. Changing my trajectory a little. I know not all of my followers will care but that's not the point. It's a base to build from.

As someone who has blogged for nearly 12 years now if I have learned ONE thing, it's that you do it whether you have the people or not. It takes time and patience to build something from scratch. But there's something out there for everyone.

Hi Kristi...

Thanks for being first to respond! It's funny, because what works seems to vary. When I was just writing whatever came to mind, wow, did I struggle. When I started asking myself who I'm talking to, it started to get easier. But that said, some people find just the opposite and they do better when they just write what shows up.

You are SO right that we have to keep doing it regardless of response. It sure does take patience to build something from scratch. But still, now is an easier time to do it than ever. When I got online, no one was building anything if they didn't know how to code. lol

Good to see you and hope you're well! :)

Hi, Linda! I've been using your 25 tips and it's really helping. I ran a promotion where if people signed up for my newsletter, I wrote them a personal haiku. I'm glad not too many people took me up on it, though. I had to write over 30 of the darn things! Anyway, I wanted to thank you for your help. The first book I intend to self-publish is a book of haiku poetry and I now know that every person who signed up for a free haiku might be interested in buying my book. I also wrote a few for the promotion good enough to add to the book! I'm on a roll. Thanks again.

Hi Denise,

Well that made me happy! I'm glad the tips are helping. lol on writing all those haikus, but what a way to make an impression. Those people aren't going to forget who you are anytime soon. You are very welcome and I'm glad you're on a roll. :)

Yes, I've thought about writing on Medium off and on for a few years now and this is the exact reason I haven't yet. There's just so much stuff on there already - and good stuff! Great, even! - how am I supposed to catch anybody's attention through all that? I for one would love to hear any tips you have about marketing one's writing within online spaces in general. That is definitely my weakest skill!

You should start if you want to start. If everyone felt this way no one would start. 🙂

Best way to catch anybody's attention is to be you. There's only one of those. That said, I got off to a rough start. My first 3 posts had very few views and I was terrified of publications so I quit for almost a year. I'm glad I came back.

Easiest way to get started is to find a friendly publication. Illumination is a great one. They're very welcoming. And then tag me on your first post and I'll share it. :)

And now I'm an editor on Illumination, so you know there's a friendly face waiting for you. When you write your first post, be sure to shoot me an email or tag me on it so I don't miss it. I'll be there with bells on to welcome you. :)

Doh! This is the fifth of your emails I have received since subscribing and I have only just realized that if I click on the title, I can comment and see comments. Haha ... thanks for everything you do.
