This is why I love your writing. You talk reality and the how- to, how- not to. I used think networking was taboo. Like you're only out to get something and once you're done,, you bail. I've come away from that morbid thinking. It's about cultivating relationships and giving as well as receiving..I think this ties in with marketing as well.

I'm looking forward to reading your article.

Thanks, Robin. I think one of the best and worst traits of humanity is that we sometimes paint each other in the colors of our experiences. I've had bad and good experiences with networking. If all I'd had were bad experiences, I might think networking is the problem. You know? It's not so much the process, but that some people taint everything they touch. I think of them as the "takers" of the world. There's a lot of that in marketing, too. But there's a lot that's really relational and doesn't have the ick. What a great observation, and thanks for adding to my thoughts. :)

My situation may be unique (full-time sailing and living on a boat) but I think it can be summed up as a lack of knowledge (the 'how') and focus.

That's fair, Michael. Also, I'd much rather hear "I don't know how" than "I hate marketing" -- I hear the latter so often, and it's always based on the absolute worst examples. lol

With social distancing the policy in all retail stores, there is no potential for cold-calls to bookstores all over the province (which happens to be the setting of my book) with a trunk-load of books or arranging in-store events (kind of a relief, actually) but the pandemic restrictions have led to everyone, including 'name' authors overflowing on social media and full page round-ups of book reviews. The chance of a first-time novel writer being noticed seems more remote than ever. It might not be so overwhelming if I could figure a way to spend a half hour a day for a month, instead of spending several hours every day worrying about where to start.

Why i am not marketing (stories)?

1- though i often get the satisfaction at my creation (others can only be a better judge), which also a surprises me, I don’t yet know how to market it. Am new to medium and don’t yet know the entire gamut of needed skills -besides creative writing:

-networking,

-get my followers/ ‘likers’ email ids,

-professional formatting,

-knowing what the market is looking for (can provide from a vast array of products up my sleeve),

-or dislikes/ turns away from

-how and what role Medium plays in presenting my stories to followers/ others in tune with their profile. Does Medium keep pushing the stories till the target member reads or for a specific period

-some essential do’s n dont’s

2- writing surely gives an inner satisfaction, and will continue to be my prime trigger.

But earning atleast some ‘coffee money’ as by-product will surely enthuse me some more. And my handicap at this is That being from India, cannot sign up on Medium’s MPP.

Have sounded many like/ even you to show some workaround or alternative platforms to satisfy this wish (earning). But none came forward

Hope your story on Marketing does it.

My roadblock is starting at ground zero with new projects. People I already associate with are not my ideal customer avatar so finding my peeps is difficult at rock bottom.

I'm a marketer and I still have these same hangups about marketing anything of my own, rather than my client's. REALLY looking forward to your article.

Thanks, Linda – looking forward to your long piece on marketing. I do some work on marketing, but what I have the time and resources to do, and what works, don't seem to be the same thing. My attempts to use social media have not yielded significant results (growth is in the single figures weekly), despite 'doing the things everyone knows work' (posting regularly, engaging as much as poss., etc.). On a more general level, I barely have enough time to do the work that pays the bills. (I know, I know, I should be grateful I'm busy; I just think I've said 'yes' to a few too many things this year.) When it comes to my own writing and poetry I'm stuck in a market-stuff OR produce-stuff dichotomy. Though to be honest, I'm not producing anything for myself at the moment... Overcommitted. And I guess if there's no new product, marketing is a moot point.
