Thank you so much for this! I just can't fit my stuff into 2 categories and there aren't ones that really fit well with anything I write, and Tom's Substack is also a little hard to pin down.
Exactly. So pick the one that fits closest, and use it for your pub. But then use the ones that fit for all your posts. I write about everything from book reviews to literature and famous dead authors and personal posts and choosing well for each post makes a world of difference. :)
We also didn't really do the website option to start with because we don't really have all that extra whatever like logos etc to work with. That appears to be the only way to be able to use tags. Oh, and their categories barely even relate. Nothing about gardening, homesteading/farming, herbals, crafting/building/projects, so IDK. It's going to all come down to tags for me.
From what you mentioned about homesteading, I'd say you'd use category tags like culture, food & drink, health & wellness, and depending on how in-depth you get, possibly also philosophy, climate & environment, or history. Building projects might fall under technology or science. I'm with you tho, I hope they expand topics in the future. I'm writing post-apocalyptic fantasy, which "fiction" merely umbrellas over, and "faith and spirituality" needs to be broken down into the wide variety of world religions and practices.
Just the ones that most apply is my take. Because I want people to find me and say omg, that's exactly what I want to read. You know? But that said, don't be afraid to go a step bigger. Like, a LOT of your posts could be tagged Culture and Politics, along with the more narrow tags like Climate, Health, etc.
That is the strangest and most random topics list. Like huh? Is that what most people are talking about or something?? LOL. I can't even 😅
But thank you, that is helpful. I did know about the overarching tags part, but not about the topics one. Though I don't fit into any of the topics at all 🤭
You made me laugh. It really is, isn't it? Like, how weird. And then I wanted to ask about it, but the robot got stuck at a mad tea party and kept asking me WHICH topic page I want to talk about. Me, the TOPIC page. Robot: WHICH topic. Around and around. Some stuff you just can't make up. lol
Woah what a (white) rabbit hole. Thank you for the clarification on all this. I have been using tags but thought they were searched more traditionally so it was super helpful to know all this esp how to create the fact that I can use them to have my own pages of posts. Did that! (:
Thank you Sam, it always makes me smile to see you. Hope you are well :)
Thank you for this advice.
You are so welcome David. :)
🤯🙏🏻 Just what I needed, thanks!
You're very welcome :)
Thank you so much for your advice! I always get stuck on the tags for articles, and you explained it well.
I'm glad that helped, Linda :)
This is SUPER helpful. Thank you Linda.
Glad it was helpful Neela, you're very welcome
This is incredibly helpful! Thank you so much for this!
You are so welcome Kristin :)
Thank you Linda. I was almost there but you filled in the cracks!!
That's good to hear. Thanks, Jill!

I bet you know this: Is it better to cram in every conceivable tag or just the ones that most apply?

Thanks. Yes, I struggle with deciding what to include!
this is SO helpful.
Much appreciated.
Thanks Maisie

🤣🤣 Omg I can only imagine. Mad tea party indeed.
lol. Right? God I was so frustrated. lol. 🤣
thank you so much for this advice
You are so welcome, Misty. Glad it was helpful :)
Thank you, Linda! That was really helpful! It's good to know that tags have their own pages. I was confused when I saw that in the settings lol.
I'm glad it was helpful. I was a little horrified at how many "pages" I'd created. Had to clean them up

It was a rabbit hole, for sure. They seem to find me. lol
OMG! Thank you, THANK YOU for making this make sense. Now I have work to do.
Right? Me, too! I started, but still have a ways to go
Looking at the list of topics make me wonder if that's created by current tags people are choosing, and then it changes...
This is altogether super helpful, Linda! Thank you!
I wondered that, too. Darn shame the robot support was so spectacularly unhelpful. Thanks, Alison :)
They are SUCH an odd collection! I can't think how else they'd come about... To scrutinize every 5 days or so might give an answer.
