Loved the tutorial! I'm looking forward to what you learn from this experiment and what future questions the data may reveal. As always, Linda, well done!

Thanks, Kathryn. I'm almost afraid to find out. lol. I fear they've made such a mess over there that nothing will help. And I hope that's not true, but I guess I will see what happens. :)

Very informative. I hope you can confirm that driving external traffic to a Medium article makes a difference.

I hope so too, Tree, but I honestly have some doubts. But we shall see.

But Medium stats are so obscure. How are you going to tell the difference between being boosted and just a major spike due to this email sending us over there?

Substack tells me how many people clicked the links, so I can look at the reads at Medium and have a pretty good idea how many came from here. It's pretty imperfect but I think it will show what I'm suspecting. ie No boost. lol

Great tips. I didn’t figure some of these out until after I started too!

Right? God I was so frustrated to find out there's no topic for writing. lol

yes, I bet, although it sets itself apart from Medium in that way. I'm interested to see if they add topics as time goes on.

Thank you for taking the time, effort & energy to curate this.

I'm going to re-do my entire Substack using this list, which serves as a reference for me in 2023!

P.S. I did not know about the SEO part.

Hope you have been feeling better.

I think I need to rework mine after digging in, too. Glad you found it helpful. It's been a little bumpy, Yan, but I appreciate that you asked. :)

Great. I'll add a point by going over there. I'm sure it will be my monthly fee (sometimes I don't know why I'm still paying it), but this is the topic I began reading your work for!

Thanks, Roy. Hope they throw me a couple pennies of that monthly fee. lol

I hope all the people in the Medium comments “thinking about” or “looking at” Substack make the jump.

Linda Caroll's avatar

I agree, Kevin. I think a big part is thinking about what they want to build because people think harder about paying for one newsletter than paying for a while site full of writing. You know?

Oh, definitely! I just hope they don't get permanently stuck in the planning stage. At some point, you have to get in the chair and start.

Why should I heart you to make you happy if I haven't read your tutor-thing yet? Is hearting a verb yet? Oh all right; I'll read it.

lol William. I guess because clicking an icon is free and takes half a second. How fun if it's so easy to make someone smile, right?

I'm today-new at this and have sweated over it. Why doesn't my page look like yours? https://llanoreads.substack.com/

Hi Lisa, try this. Go to: https://llanoreads.substack.com/publish/settings/theme

You should see a design screen. Not sure if that link will work, but if not, here's the way to get to it. Go to your dashboard, then Settings > Website > Site Design

The settings I use are:

-- Layout: Editorial

-- Hero: Feature

-- Posts: Grid

Hope that helps! :)

Thanks, I think it will. It's possible the real problem is I only have one post. Playing with layouts will be much more effective if there's content. Thanks so much!
