Great article. Overnight in the desert of Arizona, I heard the heartbeat of the Earth for the first time. Sleeping in the forest of Northern Wisconsin, the beat was even more pronounced. I think the trick is silencing the noise in our own brains while deep in Nature.

You've written a lot that I've saved, but this piece may be, for me, the most impactful. Thanks, Linda.

Thanks, Tom. That means a lot to me. Sometimes I have to wrestle words to get them to behave. This one just flowed from my fingers without so much as an edit. Right you are - I find walking in the trees helps the noise in my head fade away for a while.

I live in nature. When I try to return briefly to my city home, it makes me anxious. I believe the earth has a heartbeat. How can we tap into its rhythm?

I would love to have a little house at the edge of the woods. Honestly, the best way to tap into that rhythm is nature sounds. Studies have shown that listening to recorded sounds of a waterfall, or wind in the trees have the same effect. It's not as instant. It takes about 10 minutes of listening, but then our brain does something called frequency following, and brings us to a similar state. When it's -40 and I can't go to the river, I listen to the sounds on audio with my eyes closed.

Which I do. I currently live in a house in the middle of the woods. And we even have snow today. Keep up the good work.

I'll start listening. I highly recommend,"The Secret Life of Trees", a wonderful book!

Loved this! My favorite places on earth are national parks, the ocean, and the deep dark night sky. Especially when there are meteor showers - my favorite kind of magic, it's where I feel most alive and at peace. We have canyons and the ocean nearby and head there as often as possible. :)

Wishing you all the river time you need this weekend!

Wow; fascinating (the pulse of the earth...never read about this until now). The ancients recognized same w/o high-powered instrumentation; many cultures have claimed the earth is alive, and not just a big rock traversing the sun.

I suppose you are aware of many psychological studies of the salutary effects of walking or just being in nature??

Love the quote from Auden about art!!

Thanks, Linda. It's fascinating, isn't it. And funny how the odd little things we read just creep into writing. Yes indeed, I've read about the effects of being in nature. Have you ever read the Hidden Life of Trees? It blew my mind. Glad you loved the quote - I did, too.

Thanks Kerry. Also, I haven't forgotten your email. I'm finishing a shopping cart rebuild with 100+ pages that has to go live next week and it's been crazy trying to meet the due date. Long, long days. Just wanted you to know I haven't forgotten you. :)

No, I haven’t read the Hidden Life of Trees. Sounds like something to add to my growing list of “must reads” - unfortunately the political news and Covid news seem to be consuming way too much of my time!

Don’t watch it. Turn off the TV. Grab a book— something uplifting.
