Agreed. I would way rather grow my list slowly and reward my subscribers, than draw in people who don't care about what I do. I actually did this in my newsletter last week and the response has been wonderful. The subscribers who took advantage of my freebie were really appreciative.
Having a large list with a low read ratio will cost you hosting fee in most cases. Smaller list with high rates equals same number of readers but no hosting fees. Sounds like a no-brainer to me.
