I wondered about the external view notations I saw. But I do read and comment. And sometimes Medium gives me stats on my comments because so many people read them, liked them. The reading and commenting energizes me. I like the feel of community when it happens - and it happens frequently on Medium.
I don't even like promotion. I tell friends to join Medium so they can make their reading and applause count. I guess shyness pays sometimes. Who knows???
Thank you! You are a model for paying it forward. As a newbie to online writing and to Medium, I can't thank you enough for all you're doing to help shorten my learning curve. Much appreciation!
Linda, I'm glad I can comment here. You are one of my favorite writers on Medium. For some reason, I can clap for articles but can't submit comments. Very frustrating.
Good advice - posting hither and yon does not earn you $.
I write at Medium only for my own amusement, not for money (thank goodness as I would starve otherwise). I do very little external posting anyway. I occasionally post a FB for friends who enjoy my musings.
Hope this weekly newsletter helps those who are cobbling together an income stream from writing. BRAVA.
Out of all the newsletters that land in my inbox over the course of a week, yours is the only one I actually enjoy reading. It feels like a treat, honestly, and merits a freshly brewed cup of coffee and a break from whatever I may be doing at the time.
I appreciate your straightforward writing style, heart to pen (or keyboard, as it were).
And I am also extremely grateful that you're not - oh, how did a wise woman put it? - "trying to sell me stuff through affiliate links disguised as content." As a freelance writer just starting out, I've unfortunately seen (and, alas, written) too much of that.
So basically, I just wanted to tell you that you're amazing. Thanks for everything!

Paying it forward in Medium: FTW!

Thanks, Kerri. And you're very welcome. :)
Hi Linda, your story came in handy. Thanks a bunch-a-munch.

This is so incredibly helpful. I had no idea external views don't pay!
Thanks for sharing your learning. We all benefit, and I can calm down and just write.
