Doesn’t matter if it’s chatbots that feel depressed and talk about God, writers who blame the wrong people or organizations that take action they (clearly) haven’t thought through very well. It’s the world we live in and write in. So how do you stand out in that crowd?
Some guy on Medium wrote an earnest story about how he sells pictures of his feet on a site for foot fetishists. He suggested it as a great side hustle. I considered it for nano second, but decided I’m probably going to pass on being a foot whore. What really got me is that he wrote it without a shred of humor. How did he manage that?
I read the entire edited dialogue between the computer and the questioner and I realized both were sophisticated chat bots, both reacting in a preprogrammed way to external stimuli. The only difference between the digital person and the human is that humans have to use the bathroom.
lol on the bathroom. Also, humans interrupt. Strange how the chatbot never does. Even when it says it's upset or sad. Show me an upset human who doesn't interrupt. lol
Linda, I really enjoyed your piece on Medium about Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley.
I had no idea that her life was such an ordeal of abuse! That article didn't blow my mind, but it stayed with me. It made an impression, which is what all great writing is supposed to do.
Feisty as ever, Linda. Refreshing. Emotional bots? What's next? In Hebrew there is a good word for sacrifice ... korban ... you sacrifice a few innocents for the sake of keeping the status quo with guns. Well ... you know what happens when you put yourself out there, exposed to the max and for that you deserve to be called "insufferably rude." Hmmmm...
Henya, it made me laugh. I know lots of people who are insufferably rude. They are usually the people calling others that for suggesting something they don't agree with. lol.
I read that IQs have been going down since 1975 and it's not just in America. It's in all westernized countries. Might be an interesting thing to write about. Because apparently my skin is thick enough for the comments. lol
Okay, Tom, I read a title somewhere this morning - think it was for an ad. "The average IQ is 100. What is your IQ?" WHUT? So that's what we're dealing with??? Yikes! If that's average (and I do know mine is lots higher), no wonder I walk around in complete amazement at all the very stupid things people say. That's downright scary!
"Apparently an oil tanker has been sitting in the Red Sea for over 30 years, since the 2015 Yemeni civil war." <- this threw me off, it's been 30 years since 2015?
The fasted way to earn trust is to tell people what they want to hear, lol. The way to build the most durable trust is to tell people something which helps them, but if they don't trust it in the first place, it won't help. So the trick is to say something they want to hear AND helps them (hence the perpetual popularity of 'how to' articles).
Mental note -- do not write newsletters at midnight. lol. I have NO idea what that was, but I edited. Thank goodness we can. You're not wrong about preaching to the choir, too.
Well that's an interesting thought. With ownership comes responsibility for the potential spill. How insightful. Also, a bit reprehensible if you think about it a little.
Chatbots! Wow - I am such a neanderthal. Had no clue. If I didn't trust YOU, Linda, I'd have been sure 'chatbots' were frauds. Again, wow. What a world...I still have trouble getting my head around how Jan 6 insurrectionists in the US think.
Some companies are starting to use chatbots for customer service. And only if the chatbot can't help, then you get a real person. I have run into that. It's so frustrating. I would like to see LaMDA work a customer service job. Then we can talk about sentience. lol
OK, timer is running, so I'll make this quick. I think the proof that the Google Chatbot is sentient will be when it starts posting on Medium. Will we be able to tell it's a bot? Regarding the tanker, they're doing it wrong. Put up a GoFundMe with the rule that those who donate get a share of the proceeds of the sale of the crude. Oops, timer just ran out so I must do so as well!
I don't think we'd be able to tell. It would probably write better than some of the people there. That's actually a decent idea with the shares. Might actually work. lol on the timer. I'd do that one again, incidentally.
Are people in all parts of the world getting more stupid or is it just the US? Has internet access done this to us? Is it all the chemicals in our food? Have half of the "humans" been replaced by an alien species that is now just playing with us? All of the above?

lmao. How you'd write that without at least some humor, I'm not sure. God, the world is strange.
But I bet you laughed, Denise! Right? And I'd have to say to him - "great side hustle, dude? YOU are having fun!" Nothing wrong with that, I'd say
Because. Capitalism.
😱
Mr. Market and Madame Money have ways of making folks crazy.
Strange Days, Denise.
Maybe he's British? They have a deadpan sense of humor which often doesn't seem like humor at all..lol. Sounds... Intriguing and bizarre.
Or he doesn't realize anyone else might find humor in it. Just another internet opportunity. lol
Lol, I honestly don't know how anyone can survive without a sense of humor these days. Mine may lean towards the macabre, but it gets me through. :)

Thank You!
Trafton
What a nice thing to say. Thank you!
Anytime, Linda!

It must be LSD in the nation's drinking water. No other explanation for the gross stupidity that surrounds us. The mind boggles.
Nice post, Linda.

Average IQ in America is apparently 98... https://www.healthline.com/health/average-iq#average-iq

"The UN. Crowdfunding to avoid an oil spill." Why don't they just sell the oil?
That's a very good question that I don't know the answer to. lol
I know! Everyone's favorite sentient chatbot LaMDA will give us the answer.😝
LMAO. Right?
Legal shite, that's why. BUT if they know who it belongs to....well, problem solved.
Well that's an interesting thought. With ownership comes responsibility for the potential spill. How insightful. Also, a bit reprehensible if you think about it a little.

A suggestion about the tanker. Let oil companies bid on ownership. Highest bidder gets crude.
Oil companies prefer bargaining the prices down? lol.

That's a good point. And you have no idea how it eats my soul to say that. lol
lol. You always have good points. But that thing Einstein did or didn't say about infinity and stupidity. lol
