Happy New Year!
Keanu Reeves is worried about aging. Not so much getting older, but running out of time to do all the things he wants to do.
I wrote about it yesterday, and wow, did people resonate.
I’ve been kind of obsessed with the passing of time lately.
Part of that is end of year burnout after the crazy that is Q4 in ecommerce, for sure. But also? The first Covid death was January 9, 2020. Two years ago.
Can you even believe it?
Then I stumbled across a TED talk where some writer explained how he beats back his fears and procrastination to do the stuff he’d regret not doing.
He took a piece of paper and drew 8 rows of boxes. Ten boxes per row.
Can you guess what that represents?
A life.
A decade per row. 80 years total.
Said if he lives longer than 80, it’s bonus years. Laughed and said if you have a family history of living longer, go ahead and add another row.
Here’s the trick.
Then he colored in the boxes he’s already used up.
There’s nothing more to do, he said. He just stuck that on the wall by his desk. Doesn’t really need to do anything but see it. It motivates him.
I’m going to make one of those on New Years.
To keep me mindful that time waits for no one.
I’m thinking it might be the fire I need to make the time to work on the projects I’ve been wanting to work on, but not actually making time for.
What about you?
What have you been putting off?
Do you have New Year’s rituals or practices that you like? I usually don’t but I think this year it will be colored pencils and a cinnamon latte.

I love the idea of the 8 x 10 matrix of squares representing a typical life.
I think I will adapt it for my home office!
I want to do more traveling (if and when the pandemic ends). Maybe hire a music teacher to learn guitar and piano!
I'm mired in the process of putting together my poetry book. I keep second guessing my decisions and making excuses instead of making decisions. Time feels very short to me now. According to the colored boxes I've only got a few left......
