Happy Friday,
Urgent and important are not the same. We know that, in a philosophical way but mostly ignore we ignore it.
That’s how people die with their dreams still inside them.
The problem, of course, is that time flies.
It doesn’t fly as the crow flies, time flies more like a small child hurling himself through the day in a nonstop flurry of doing with little attention to the difference between what is important… and what is merely urgent.
I saw a sign once that said “lack of planning on your part does not constitute an emergency on mine” and it made me laugh, nevermind that it’s mostly a lie. A lack of planning on the part of he who employs us does, often, constitute an emergency on our part.
Because we’re replaceable, and we all know that. If there’s one thing this pandemic has shown us all, it’s what happens when a whole lot of people lose their income.
But still. No one on their deathbed ever wished they worked a little more.
So how do you make time to chase dreams?
The Eisenhower Decision Matrix
Have you ever heard of it? Stephen Covey wrote about it in his book, The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People. A lot of people read the book. But if you ask most of them what the 7 habits are, they couldn’t tell you.
Most because they’re stuck in the minutia of their daily life. Reading a book and remembering or applying what it says are two different animals.
The Eisenhower decision matrix puts urgent and important on an axis. For example, downtime and hobbies? Not urgent, no. But important.
The best part is that you only need to see it once to change the way you look at where your time goes.
Maybe it will free up some time to chase that dream.
“The future belongs to those who believe in the beauty of their dreams.” ― Eleanor Roosevelt

Hi Linda. Sorry it took me some time to get around to reading this article. At the time I didn't think it was "urgent" but I feel it's important to read your post. Thanks for being there.
