If your Medium views are down, I have an idea

If you read my post last week, you know that thanks to SimilarWeb, I’ve been poking my nose into Medium publication stats that are really none of my business.

Last week I looked at how much traffic different publications get.

This time, I looked at Medium stats—and wow.

My views have been down. I figured it was because the publication that drove a good half my views up and left Medium and took 2 million views with them.

But then I noticed other people complaining about views being down. My free trial of the Pro version of SimilarWeb wasn’t expired yet, so I figured why not have a look?

Here’s Medium visitor stats for the last 2 months…

Now, that bottom line isn’t zero, so it’s not as bad as it looks. Interestingly, they are down just over 2 million views.

Here’s the one that got me…

Medium is bouncing 73% of their traffic. Know what that means? It means 73% of their visitors come and take one look at the homepage and leave. Yikes. Anything over 40% is bad, but 73% bounce rate is quite dreadful.

Despite all that, Medium still gets a lot of views. 72.5 million in the last 30 days from almost 28 million different people. That’s a lot of faces.

Course, most of the faces don’t look like you and me.

Most of Medium’s visitors are male, 25-34. But it doesn’t mean anything because of the sheer numbers. For example — that measly 10.68% of visitors who are 45-54 works out to almost 3 million people.

But still… it sucks when views are down.

Especially given the double whack. First, Medium’s traffic is down overall. Plus, I’m not in the primary demographic of the site. Maybe you aren’t, either.

So, I’ve been thinking. Wondering if there’s a way to give that cranky little algorithm a poke and maybe nudge the views up some. And I have an idea.

Just a crazy experiment I want to try and I need about 10-12 people to join in. At least for the initial round. If it works, we might be able to go bigger.

Just fyi, I won’t pick the test group right away. Lots of readers are in different time zones and don’t get here at the same time. And if we get more than 10-12 interested, I’ll figure that out as we go. lol. Maybe more than one experiment.
