I Have Boost Nominations Left, Do You Have A Good Story To Share?
Plus, a cool new feature at Substack to help grow your list
When I was a kid, I was into track and field. I was really good at long jump and sprint. Despite being the shortest kid in the entire class, it was astounding how far I could hurdle my body across the long jump pits.
One day I was sitting in the bleachers watching the kids run laps in the distance run. This one kid was so far ahead of everyone else I was astounded. Omg, look at that kid, I said, impressed. Oh no, someone told me, laughing. He’s not that far ahead. He’s that far behind. He just looks like he’s winning. He’s still on the last lap.
This week, that’s me.
Y’all, it’s been a week and that’s all I’m going to say about that so I don’t descend into complaining about bloated code and all the other technical joys that have already had way more mindshare than any one technical snafu ought to in a seven day span.
New feature at Substack…
Substack has a cool new feature called Subscriber Referrals. It lets you give a gift to people who recommend your newsletter. People with paid newsletters can offer discounts and such, but some people are giving away a pdf, too.
So, like, you create some kind of gift or incentive and anyone who refers people to your newsletter gets that gift. People are using it to offer all kinds of cool stuff from downloads to discounts to guest posts.
I can’t tell you much by way of details, because it’s been that kind of week, which means I haven’t read enough much less implemented it. But I plan to when I get a minute to breathe. If you’re interested you can read more about it here.
Also? I have unused boost nominations…
Because it’s been that kind of week, I have not used up my allotted amount of boost nominations at Medium. If you know of a really well written story that didn’t get the love it deserved, feel welcome to share in the comments and I’ll go have a read over the weekend and see if I can help a few writers get a little more views.
Couple of notes on that — last time I did this, people sent links to posts from years ago. I can’t nominate old posts, they have to be recent. Only posts published in the last six months can be nominated for a boost.
There’s two factors I look for. First, is it well written. Second, does it have emotional impact. Have you ever read a story and said wow, I wish I wrote that? Those are the kind of stories I try to find. There’s a lot of them. Finding them is the tricky part.
No, I don’t mind if you one of your own that you’re really proud of.
Plus, here’s another benefit. Most of my readers also read comments, so whether I nominate the suggested stories or not, you’ll probably get some views just from sharing in the comments.
Looking forward to spending some weekend time reading.

That's pretty generous of you Linda - I wrote one a few weeks back about my experience of having elderly parents who live in a diff country and my concerns regarding their welfare and wellbeing - I think it reflects the difficult questions we have to face as our parents grow older and are unable to care for themselves (from a cultural perspective) - here's the link https://medium.com/p/d7c05b98df45 - pls let me know what you think & thanks!
This story by Bob Merckel. He shares memories of his Grandma, the family matriarch. Emotional with a great life lesson:
