Making stupid mistakes isn’t the same as being boring.
I read a story where the writer said “should of” instead of should’ve. Or should have. Knee jerk reaction — ugh. I laughed at the dumb mistake, but kept reading.
Most of the time, people forgive stupid mistakes if you’re interesting.
Not publishers or agents, no.
There’s a literary agent in New York that rejects books if he finds stupid mistakes in the first 5 pages. Because here’s the thing. If you’re submitting a manuscript, they expect you to know how to write. Which means not making stupid mistakes.
They might overlook bad writing if you have a gigantic audience, because that audience tells them they’ll sell enough books to pay an editor.
But if you’re not submitting a manuscript? If you’re writing for readers, not publishers or agents — we’ll forgive your dumb mistakes. If you’re interesting.
Oh sure, there’s always going to be the jerk who highlights your mistake. Or posts criticism. In real life, they’re the people who tear others down to lift themselves up. Never mind them. Life is too short for that nonsense.
But the rest of us? Really. We just want interesting. If you’re not interesting, we lose patience real fast. Click. Gone.
