One word - SIGH.

I saw that headline today when I login to Medium but I didn’t even bother to click on it knowing that it may jolly well discourage me further.

And truth is right now, I am doing what I can to raise my positive vibes. LOL.

You did me a favor and proved my instincts right by summarizing it for me because you know, curiosity sometimes kill the rat, cat I mean. (I am born in the year of Rat!)

Now, how do we wage a protest against the Medium folks? Because it really looks like not a single soul is listening there.

I guess it's up to us to highlight our own best stories of the year lol. That seems so weird they chose ones with little interaction. Hell, even I wrote a personal best at 7.3K claps this year.

I've put on blinders with Medium. I block out all the "news" and "bests" over there. I have perfected the art of the fast scroll 😄

Hahahaha! They’re guilty of clickbait. Where the curators?? Quick! Someone email them. …geesh. Sad. Really sad.

I saw that story. Didn’t even bother to read it. Glad I didn’t waste my time.

I know what I like, which authors work I generally like, the genre of topics, etc., etc.

Why do I need someone whose work I do not follow tell me what is good?

It would be like a chef at a restaurant telling me to order oysters. I already know that oysters are slimy when raw (yuck) and I don’t like them fried either.

I probably sound a bit contrary with these remarks; and that’s ok by me.

I'm in a diverse group with entrepreneurs and a few writers. We were discussing platforms for writers and trying to figure out the best strategy going forward. Medium+substack? Just one? I stopped writing on Medium and went back to reading and commenting. Is there a way to properly test which platform is the best fit? I love your data and dissection of it. :)

They said applauded, shared, and highlighted, so I guess it was the combination that made the difference. Why number of comments wasn't included, we'll never know.

"Most of their “most applauded” stories had under 5K claps." What were they thinking? Thanks for pointing this out.

So 85% of the "top" writers on Medium are men? Hmmm. It seems that 23% of the writers I follow are men, and of the top 5, 100% are women, present company included. I support 4 writers on Patreon, two of whom are not on any platform other than their own websites. Per Patreon one has just over 1,000 supporters contributing nearly $4,800 a month. The other has less than 800 supporters for $2,800 a month. Only 1 of my Medium favorites is on Patreon, but I would cheerfully dump Medium and support them directly if I could. As Seth Godin might say, these two writers have their "minimum viable audience".

Thanks for the observation. I glanced the article over and never even stopped to question it. Nice work Linda!

I'm so disappointed in Medium these days. Instead of growing into a place where 'real' writers would want to be, they've turned into a pandering, money-grubbing tabloid site.

I rarely go there to read anymore, though I do post something I've published elsewhere every now and then. I feel bad about it, but every time I do go back, I find it even worse than before.

It's a problem when one man gets to make all the rules. He's not invincible or even smart about his decisions, so none of it makes any sense. He sees a bottom line and hopes it'll keep on going. No thought any more to encouraging talent or keeping it classy.

I doubt if any of us can change his mind. It's still a reasonably good place to publish, but it should never be the only place. That just begs for heartbreak.

I have had multiple occurrences of knowing by fact from outside sources that the stats displayed by medium were wrong and submitted them to their help site. Invariably, the next day I get an email blaming lag and then the stats are then correct(ish). These stories are always anti-Marxist. Also, these stories won't show up in Medium at all, not even on my profile, until I have complained, at which point they show up and the stats start increasing after days or weeks of just sitting at zero.

I don't think they check your picture to see if you're colored, or female or what have you. I do know that I clicked on one story, about the vital, life-changing, planet-saving importance of teaching kids about Critical race Theory. I read the article and wrote a short response, saying my precise feeling about it. ( which you now know)

I really don't need them or anybody re-hashing old stories and telling me how important they are. I guess Medium and others have some very subjective reasons for pushing a certain agenda, and I do my part by pouring cold water on them.

And everybody's happy.
